Memorial Day is a United States federal holiday that is observed on the last Monday of May (observed in 2008 on May 26). It was formerly known as Decoration Day. This holiday commemorates U.S. men and women who have died in military service to their country. It began first to honor Union soldiers who died during the American Civil War. After World War I, it was expanded to include those who died in any war or military action. One of the longest standing traditions is the running of the Indianapolis 500, which has been held in conjunction with Memorial Day since 1911. It is also traditionally viewed as the beginning of summer by many, for many schools are dismissed around Memorial Day.

Many people observe this holiday by visiting cemeteries and memorials. A national moment of remembrance takes place at 3 p.m. US Eastern time. Another tradition is to fly the U.S. flag at half-staff from dawn until noon local time. Volunteers place a U.S. flag upon each gravesite located in a National Cemetery.

Many politicians and community leaders give speeches at community gatherings on Memorial Day.In addition to remembrance, Memorial Day is also a time for picnics, family gatherings, and sporting events. Some Americans also view Memorial Day as the unofficial beginning of summer and Labor Day as the unofficial end of the season. The national Click it or ticket campaign ramps up beginning Memorial Day weekend, noting the beginning of the most dangerous season for auto accidents and other safety related incidents. The USAF "101 Critical days of summer" begin on this day as well. Some Americans use Memorial Day to also honor any family members who have died, not just servicemen.

The VFW stated in a 2002 Memorial Day Address, "Changing the date merely to create three-day weekends has undermined the very meaning of the day. No doubt, this has contributed a lot to the general public's nonchalant observance of Memorial Day."

Following the end of the Civil War, many communities set aside a day to mark the end of the war or as a memorial to those who had died. Some of the places creating an early memorial day include Charleston, South Carolina; Boalsburg, Pennsylvania; Richmond, Virginia; Carbondale, Illinois; Columbus, Mississippi; many communities in Vermont; and some two dozen other cities and towns. These observances eventually coalesced around Decoration Day, honoring the Union dead, and the several Confederate Memorial Days.

Decoration Day, c. 1900. "You bet I'm goin' to be a soldier, too, like my Uncle David, when I grow up."According to Professor David Blight of the Yale University History Department, the first memorial day was observed in 1865 by liberated slaves at the historic race track in Charleston. The site was a former Confederate prison camp as well as a mass grave for Union soldiers who had died while captive. A parade with thousands of freed blacks and Union soldiers was followed by patriotic singing and a picnic.

The official birthplace of Memorial Day is Waterloo, New York. The village was credited with being the birthplace because it observed the day on May 5, 1866, and each year thereafter, and because it is likely that the friendship of General John Murray, a distinguished citizen of Waterloo, and General John A. Logan, who led the call for the day to be observed each year and helped spread the event nationwide, was a key factor in its growth.

General Logan had been impressed by the way the South honored their dead with a special day and decided the Union needed a similar day. Reportedly, Logan said that it was most fitting; that the ancients, especially the Greeks, had honored their dead, particularly their heroes, by chaplets of laurel and flowers, and that he intended to issue an order designating a day for decorating the grave of every soldier in the land, and if he could he would have made it a holiday.

Logan had been the principal speaker in a citywide memorial observation on April 29, 1866, at a cemetery in Carbondale, Illinois, an event that likely gave him the idea to make it a national holiday. On May 5, 1868, in his capacity as commander-in-chief of the Grand Army of the Republic, a veterans' organization, Logan issued a proclamation that "Decoration Day" be observed nationwide. It was observed for the first time on May 30 of the same year; the date was chosen because it was not the anniversary of a battle. The tombs of fallen Union soldiers were decorated in remembrance of this day.

Many of the states of the U.S. South refused to celebrate Decoration Day, due to lingering hostility towards the Union Army and also because there were very few veterans of the Union Army who lived in the South. A notable exception was Columbus, Mississippi, which on April 25, 1866 at its Decoration Day commemorated both the Union and Confederate casualties buried in its cemetery.

The alternative name of "Memorial Day" was first used in 1882, but did not become more common until after World War II, and was not declared the official name by Federal law until 1967 . On June 28, 1968, the United States Congress passed the Uniform Holidays Bill, which moved three holidays from their traditional dates to a specified Monday in order to create a convenient three-day weekend and for the first time recognized Columbus Day as a federal holiday. The holidays included Washington's Birthday (which evolved into Presidents' Day), Veterans Day, and Memorial Day. The change moved Memorial Day from its traditional May 30 date to the last Monday in May. The law took effect at the federal level in 1971 . After some initial confusion and unwillingness to comply at the state level, all fifty states adopted the measure within a few years, although Veterans Day was eventually changed back to its traditional date. Ironically, most corporate businesses no longer close on Columbus Day or Veterans Day, and an increasing number are staying open on President's Day as well. The holiday has endured as one where most businesses stay closed because it marks the beginning of the "summer vacation season" (similar to neighboring Canada's Victoria Day, which occurs on the prior Monday).

The Designer Handbag Challenge: Gucci Handbag v. Chanel Handbag

We used three experiments to test the practical reliability of the two designer handbags in question. Each experiment was conducted with equal strenuousness on a Gucci handbag and a Chanel handbag of comparable size (about two liters). With each experiment we used fresh handbags.

Experiment #1
One of the most important jobs of a designer handbag is the ability to hold up to the everyday abuse doled out by a modern working woman. To test this capacity of the handbags we fastened the strap of each purse to a post, which was spun by a 10 hp lawn mower engine. The post applied an equal amount of centrifugal force to each designer handbag, causing a maximum angular velocity of 50 revolutions per minute. A dummy of mass 90kg was then hung across the bags' angular paths of motion to simulate a purse snatcher or other perpetrator. Damage to the handbags was then measured.

Experiment #2
The second most important capacity of the Gucci handbag and the Chanel handbag we compared was the ability of each bag to resist spillage of its unmentionable contents. To test this, we filled each designer handbag with tampons and dropped them unzipped from a second floor window of a men's college dorm building onto a busy sidewalk. We repeated this 10 times with each designer handbag and counted the number of ejected feminine hygiene implements after each drop.

Experiment #3
Our final test was to determine how well each designer handbag would stand up to the aftermath of a wild night on the town. We wanted to find out the extent of the bags' abilities to contain and recover from a drunken puking. To accomplish this we poured an equal amount of liquid projectile (two liters) from a funnel at a height of one meter. The greater than normal height was to approximate the speed and splatter effect of an actual puking. We measured the handbags' ability to catch the liquid and then had the bags dry cleaned and measured the residual fragrance. We obtained the liquid from the gutter outside the local bar at 1 am one Saturday morning.

Analysis

Experiment #1
Each designer handbag in this experiment was swung around the post until it struck the dummy exactly 30 times. The bags were then examined. Afterward the bags were swung again until their straps broke. After the first 30 strikes, the Gucci handbag finish was scuffed and its stitches near the strap were beginning to pull apart. The chanel handbag was equally scuffed, but there were no evident signs of stress on the strap. However, a snap from one of the side pockets of the Chanel handbag was detached. In the second part of the experiment the strap of the Gucci handbag broke after 19 more rotations. Not surprisingly, the Chanel handbag lasted more than twice as long with 42 rotations.

Experiment #2
We filled each handbag with 22 tampons before each drop. We discovered that the chanel handbag was more likely to tip over upon impact (eight of 10 drops compared to five of 10 with the Gucci handbag), causing more of its contents to eject. We didn't correct for this considering tipping tendency a major factor in every day spilling incidents. The average number of tampons ejected from the Chanel handbag was 13.5. The average number ejected from the Gucci handbag was 8. On the fourth drop of the Chanel handbag several of the ejected items were picked up by a passer by, but were soon recovered.

Experiment #3
For the first part of this experiment, we had an intern hold the bags open as wide as possible while we poured the liquid. We then measured the amount of splatter not captured by the handbags. We also measured leakage of liquid from the seams of the bag. The gucci handbag failed to catch 340 mL of liquid while the Chanel handbag lost only 280 mL. We surmise this is because the Chanel handbag could be opened wider than the Gucci handbag. However, the Chanel handbag leaked more than the Gucci handbag. For the second part of this experiment, we dry cleaned the handbags and measured the aroma held by the bags. Each designer handbag exhibited a high level of lingering fragrance even after a second cleaning. The results of this test were inconclusive.

Conclusion Some of the tests applied to the designer handbags were inconclusive. The second part of experiment #1 and the first part of experiment #3 favored the Chanel handbag, while experiment #2 favored the gucci handbag. Overall, we believe the Chanel handbag is the better choice for practical use. But we warn that items intended to be kept unseen in a Chanel handbag should be secured with additional means. Any designer handbag should be cleaned several times after being used as a puke sack.

Suggestions for Further Study on Designer Handbags We suggest further valuable studies be conducted on this important topic. Other experiments could be devised to test such capacities as standing up to backing over by an automobile, clandestinely packing food into a movie theater, accidental machine washings, and resisting animals searching for hidden treats. Fashion History Lesson: Lanvin

In my fashion book, the name Lanvin may be a new addition, but this brand has been around for decades. I enjoyed reading this article by Linda Grant, Lanvin: a hidden allure which offers us a history lesson about Jeanne Lanvin's rise to fame in the fashion industry. It's amazing how long the brand has lasted considering Jeanne Lanvin wasn't a self-promoter and didn't have any public relations. She simply had a love for quality. Alber Elbaz, the current designer for Lanvin, saw something in this brand to give it new life. It wasn't until this year did I really pay attention to Lanvin - more so because of the recent bold and chic ad campaigns in the fashion glossies. Made in China: Designer handbag fashion totally misunderstood

Wow! What’s all this garble about “everything” made in China being counterfeit or fake? Do people understand the design and manufacturing process? Or, are they just determined to squabble about one of the manufacturing industry’s greatest resources?

True, there’s been a lot of media about children’s toys being manufactured poorly. Shame on China for the mess they’ve created. They’ll fix the problem, or they’ll lose business. We all learn from our mistakes, right? Or, at least the smart folks learn. And, let’s face it, China is no dummy!

China has been manufacturing most of the clothing, shoes, handbags, and accessories stocked in all the major department stores throughout the world for many, many years. And, this is not going to fade or go away. China offers low-cost labor for low-end to high-end designer handbags, clothing and just about anything around the house.

Most people don’t understand the truth about the Made in China label. China has been producing most of the Designer Merchandise sold in the USA for very long time. Why? Because the price to manufacture in China keeps prices as low as possible for consumers. People complain about the high price tags on designer handbags, clothing, shoes, and accessories. If the same item made in China was made in the USA or Europe the prices would be doubled or tripled.

If the Hermes Birkin bag was assembled by hand in China instead of France, the price would not be $7,000.00 each. If Italian leather was sent to China for the assembly of Prada handbags, the prices would not be $3,000.00 each. Please put things into perspective.

Burberry’s new management decided to use China for some of its assembled manufacturing needs and people went crazy. The thought of using a designer handbag made in China is misunderstood, misinterpreted, and misguided. The product made in China consists of the same quality of fabric as if it were made in the USA, France, England or Italy. The only difference is the designer item was assembled in China, or any other country offering a cheaper assembly manufacturing process.

Most of the high-end Designers buy fabrics, leathers, and materials from the USA or Europe, pay a premium price for the high-quality fabrication, and then negotiate manufacturing in China. The materials and specifications are sent to China and made. Representatives from each of the Design Houses travel to China or other manufacturing countries to supervise the process. The finished products are shipped to the USA and other parts of the world for sale. It’s a process kept sweet and as simple as possible. It creates jobs and produces a global economy.

Most consumers don’t know the designer manufacturing process or understand the details. They see a Made in China label and assume it’s a counterfeit item or fake. In reality, it’s not. It’s a moderately priced item made in a country which has been stereo-typed. And, we can’t blame the consumer because most of the junk, counterfeit and fake merchandise bearing the trademarks of others are made in China. Hopefully, the USA Customs Department working closely with the fashion industry will help end importing counterfeit goods.

There are many countries available the fashion designers use to outsource labor. The high-end leather designer handbags with high-ticket price tags are made in the USA, Italy, London and France. The lower cost designer products are made elsewhere. Most designers offer collections every season which provide both high-end and lower priced products. For example, Ralph Lauren has five price and fabrication determined collections: RL Classics, Collection, Black Label, Blue Label and Lauren. Plus, many of the designers produce a separate collection for outlet stores and discount stores like Marshalls, TJ Max, Target, Walmart, etc.

Some of the countries are more commonly used than others, and nonetheless they are countries with capabilities and low-cost labor. Some of these countries include, and are not limited to China, Turkey, Mexico, Romania, India and Portugal.

Fashion designers who make designer handbags, designer wallets, designer scarves, designer clothing, hats, shoes, etc. use these countries because they can sell their products at affordable prices. Some of the fashion designers include, and are not limited to Coach, Burberry, Liz Claiborne, Robert Rodriquez, Max Studio, Tommy Hilfiger, Ralph Lauren, Marc Jacobs, Michael Kors, Kate Spade, Dooney & Bourke, Juicy Couture, Donna Karan, Anne Klein, Brighton, and many, many others.

Just because an item is Made in China, it does not constitute fake or counterfeit. Let’s get this straight and communicated clearly. The reason the item was made in China is because at that point in time, the designer’s manufacturing team decided it was the best business decision to make for a cost-effective distribution of its product and collection.

The next time you see a Made in China label on a designer handbag or accessory, and you purchased it from a reputable source, thank your lucky stars for the bargain price you paid. If you have any doubt, take the item to the designer’s boutique for authentication and peace of mind. Don’t assume just because it’s Made in China it’s a fake. Do you know what “to assume” does? It makes an ass out of u and me! So, please don’t ASS U ME.

Not so long ago the fastest way to update your wardrobe was, ironically, by throwing in something old and a bit tatty - a 1940s tea dress from your gran's wardrobe, a 1950s cashmere cardigan from a charity shop or a retro brooch you bought for 50p at a car boot sale.

But now vintage is everywhere it's a different story.

As ever in fashion, the cache is in exclusivity. Which is why true fashionistas are becoming obsessed with the "new vintage" - clothes with provenance.

Think: Chanel circa 1925, limited- edition Birkins or Dior designed by Gianfranco Ferre.

The market for luxury vintage pieces with proven heritage or connection to an iconic design house has exploded.

Never has there been so much cachet for a celebrity to sport archive Valentino or Chanel on the red carpet.

Auction houses such as Christie's now regularly host sales of vintage clothing. As a result of this demand, the price of designer vintage has more than quadrupled in the past five years. (or up to ten times if the piece has connections to a classic film, famed actress or rare period.)

There's also a growing clutch of websites devoted to selling authenticated vintage pieces at premium prices.

This week Yoox.com is hosting an exclusive 100-item sale of Chanel vintage clothing (in May this year it launched a similar sale from the Gucci archive).

The sale will include everything from jewellery to cocktail dresses and winter coats, some from as early as the 1950s and others from the mid-1980s when Karl Lagerfeld took the helm.

Meanwhile, luxury auction sites such as Portero.com are now selling qualified vintage and second hand owned accessories including Piaget watches, Tiffany & Co, Hermes bags and Rolex watches.

Upmarket London boutiques are catching on, too. Browns boutique now stocks E2, a label which combines vintage pieces by Pucci and YSL alongside contemporary clothing.

The ultrahip Dover Street Market now includes a concession for Decades - LA's coolest vintage store where Hollywood starlets including Chloe Sevigny and Julia Roberts buy their red carpet gowns.

"It's a consistently good part of the store," says store manager Dickon Bowden. "We have had some incredible pieces that sold the same day we received them."

He reveals that recently a turquoise Chanel haute couture princess dress (designed by Coco Chanel herself) sold within minutes of arriving, although he won't be drawn on the price.

At the same time, small or ontheirway out fashion houses with a prestigious heritage have never been so attractive to investors and luxury conglomerates.

Halston, the 1970s American label synonymous with Studio 54 glamour, is to be relaunched this February by film mogul Harvey Weinstein and shoe expert Tamara Mellon.

The plan? A global luxury brand.

Cult British label Ossie Clark is also scheduled for a revival this February with investment from WGSN (a fashion news service) founder Marc Worth.

It's a sound investment considering the booming designer vintage market. Halston has always been popular with fashion-lovers, but with its relaunch imminent, the price of vintage pieces is set to rocket.

Here the consumer base has expanded from a small niche to everyone from celebrities to fashion lovers and investors.

Reese Witherspoon handpicked her own 2006 Oscar dress - a 1950s Dior number - in a Paris store, Mellon is said to have a host of vintage Halston pieces and auction houses are now attracting as many fashion junkies as they are antique enthusiasts.

Some of the highest-value items are those related to film stars. Last year Christie's grabbed headlines with the sale of the iconic black Givenchy dress worn by Audrey Hepburn in Breakfast At Tiffany's.

The bidding reached a whopping £410,000. In this case, the dress was more than just vintage Givenchy, it was cultural history.

"Having a great story behind a piece always adds to value," says Monica Turcich, vintage expert at Christie's.

"Without the story, that Givenchy piece was just a little black dress; but with the provenance, it's a £410,000 design icon.

"People fall in love with the history behind a piece. We sell pieces with royal connections, like the massive sale of Diana's dresses in 1997 [auctioned a few weeks before her death]. Buyers fall for the romance of owning a piece of that fantasy lifestyle."

For collectors, vintage also has the advantage of being wearable. A 1950s Dior suit can be viewed either as a work of art to be looked at only, or thrown on for a fabulous dinner party.

"We have three real groups of bidders and registered buyers - collectors and museums, dealers and those buying to wear," says Turcich. "The collectors range from national museums to couture houses looking to fill gaps in their archives, or your average girl on the street.

"I'm seeing more of the women who buy-to-wear being increasingly knowledgeable and interested in acquiring an iconic name, so the buy-to-wear girl is fast becoming a collector."

It helps that luxury vintage pieces are now also a credible investment, so people are getting in early.

"People see them as tradeable assets - someone will buy a 1993 Louis Vuitton Murakami bag knowing it will become a collector's item," says Stephanie Phair of Portero.com.

She adds that many savvy insiders now buy pieces by young designers with small runs, aware that their collection will be much coveted in future. Pieces by Chanel, Hermes, Chloe and other brands in good condition regularly retain or increase in value over time - even if you wear them occassionally.

Turcich adds: "Wearing an item can affect the value - it's difficult to wear anything without affecting it in some way.

"That said, most of the best vintage has been worn at some point, so just being worn isn't enough to destroy value. The dress from Breakfast At Tiffany's, for example, was made to be worn by Audrey Hepburn and, therefore, is more valuable than if it had been just a nice black Givenchy dress.

"It depends on why you're buying: if to wear, then it won't matter; if you're buying to collect, you'd probably want to store it as is."

Value is also connected to current trends or events.

For example, the recent sweep of body-conscious trends in designer collections has seen fashion-lovers clamouring for archive Hervè Lèger and Azzedine Alia.

After all, when anyone can walk into Harvey Nichols and snap up a dress from the current collection, but it takes considerably more money and fashion know-how to track down an original from the 1980s heyday.

Why else have Victoria Beckham, Kate Beckinsale, Keira Knightley and Lindsay Lohan all been sporting their "bandage" dresses on the red carpet recently?

"Fashion has become such a disposable industry. If you see three celebrities wearing the same Chloe dress the same day, the designers are totally over-exposed, the same designs are everywhere," concludes Steve Philip, co- owner of Rellik vintage and collector of Vivienne Westwood. "But what isn't everywhere is an old classic."
