The coming back of Fashion Styles

By: Alyssa Alexandra

Fashion is one of the needs of every people. It can make people more beautiful as well as affirm any one's styles. And as you may know, the fashion seems like a cycle, it can bring classical and contemporary period feature and sometimes it is combined both feature. At present, the fashion is coming back to old fashion and makes more people like it.

While fashions of today are definitely more of a combination of function while pleasing to the eye, some would think it's due to progress made in the area of fashion, and would not dare look back to our past. Reality has a way of denying what we all think. But whether you are pleased to see it happen or otherwise, we will be and are experiencing a revival of the popular fashion styles from our past. And so you see, the fashion styles of old have a way of coming back.

Now the old style is not merely clothing but also it is apparent in our accessories and even our hairstyles (we all remember the beehive or you may remember it as the B-52). It is also evident in the attitude of our youth. Okay, okay the big question is why? Why is old school fashion coming back?

There are numerous reasons why we all play our part in bringing back the styles of yesterday. I suppose mostly it is the fascination with our past. And what's more it all started with television. Perhaps what you don't know is that those of you that are fascinated with our past are the same people that grew up watching reruns of old shows such as Happy Days for instance. And those of us (You know who we are) also enjoy watching That 70's Show. There is something nostalgic about those shows that just send us back to that era.

We've been shown so much of the old style; let's face it-it's in our media, movies, old TV and even at the cinema. We all remember watching shows like Starsky and Hutch and Charlie's Angels. Come to think of it Old School Fashion is even portrayed in our choice of automobiles but we won't touch on that this go around.

The media was the spark that lit the fire that brought this revival. But where is the fuel? I suppose the truth of the matter would be that some of us like the old school fashion. It helps us reconnect with a past which was not nearly as complicated. I believe this to be THE reason why it continues to resurface because each time it does we find that we actually liked it.

As this happens it becomes quite popular and even sexy. Let's face it; old school fashion was designed to show off the human body. Everything was fitted, shirts, pants, not to mention cool patterns and designs and fabrics, these are the trademarks of our past, a past which young people of today have not experienced.

Most of us think old school fashion to be very cool, especially with today's technology and comfortable fabrics, these designs can showy and casual at the same time.

Maybe sometimes you wonder why is old fashion come back and whether they can get the customer's mind? I think that matter can cause in the future and maybe it has the strong position in the market.

Paris fashions skirt the present for the past

Christine Suppes, Special to The Chronicle

Do designers look forward or backward for inspiration and direction? We have just come out of several years of fashion subservience to the cult of Marie Antoinette. Yet last week at the Paris fall 2008 shows, there was nary a milkmaid ruffled frock to be found in most collections.

Fashion history lessons, however, are always available, and no designer is fonder of runway tutorials than John Galliano for Dior. His early-'60s-style ensembles of boxy jackets and pleated dresses in color blocks of chartreuse, violet, pink and orange recalled well-dressed women in the era between JFK's Camelot and the flower children. High-crowned, broad-brimmed hats with big hair and heavy eyeliner added a hard-edged, aggressive glamour.

Andrew Gn is another who enjoys historical reference. His exuberant if slightly gothic show featured sheer, high-necked blouses worn with high-waisted trousers and lacy three-quarter coats. When asked backstage about his collection, the designer said, "Simply Oscar Wilde." But one had to wonder whether he'd had another Oscar in mind, namely Oscar de la Renta, for whom he once worked at Balmain.

"It's all about color this coming season," said Ken Downing, fashion director at Neiman Marcus. "We will see a lot of shiny looks, and the juxtaposition of matte and shine."

For the first time in several seasons, accessories took a backseat to clothes. Christian Lacroix proved that fewer accessories and embellishment added more elegance and glamour to his best show in years. It was at Chanel that the embargo on accessories was most apparent. The models wore black and white, long and short, distressed and impeccably cut skirts and jackets, but no trousers were shown. They embraced the oversized handbags and shoes on the stage, but did not carry or wear them.

Two very different debuts took place this week. The highly anticipated Valentino collection by former Gucci designer Alessandra Facchinetti was pretty and girly, a young take on an old master's metier. The era of classic Valentino is over, and although older socialites and movie stars may weep, younger women will prefer Facchinetti's natural, fresh style.

At Emanuel Ungaro, 23-year-old Esteban Cortazar, a Colombian native who grew up in Miami, made his debut. (See story, front page).

The geometric black and white beaded gowns at Elie Saab were spectacular. Although he is sometimes dismissed as too formulaic, Saab has the pulse of pretty. This is what many women want, including actresses and socialites who embrace Saab's brand of glamour and femininity. At Lanvin, the color was black, but the moment was modern and light-hearted. Again, this was an accessory-free collection, which no doubt added to the lightness. Designer Alber Elbaz is rapidly becoming fashion's darling. His clothes have the quality of exactly fitting the moment. The collection is unfailingly chic and refined, but with enough edge to be memorable.

John Galliano's own collection owed much to the show's set and choreography. He created Xanadu, with a giant Buddha, incense, naked men lounging on a sofa, and bird skeleton mobiles. His models skipped onto the runway and scampered through the Asian motifs in short fur jackets over graceful ankle-length dresses. The best gowns were in floral printed chiffon, which are so desirable at the moment as to be almost cult-like. The schizophrenia between Galliano's exuberant and youthful signature collection and the historical and hard one he designed for Dior is this season's most thrilling fashion mystery.

Vintage Designer Handbags - Is it Vintage or Just Plain Used?

By Deanna Key

Vintage bags are new again. Just look around, they are everywhere. They were the talk of the fashion industry when many ‘A list’ celebrities were seen toting vintage handbags, gowns and accessories at this years Emmy Awards.

Buying vintage handbags is a great way to broaden your handbag collection. There are thousands to choose from and can sometimes be bought for pennies on the dollar. But when is a vintage handbag right for you, and what makes a bag vintage and not just used?

You will need to determine if the new handbag you are in the market for will be used frequently or are you more interested in the bag as a collectable. There is no harm in wanting to use a vintage handbag, how else are you and your impeccable sense of fashion going to be the topic at this years Christmas party, but it is important to buy a bag that will hold up to the challenge. So make sure you follow some simple guidelines when purchasing your new vintage handbag.

Only buy from a reputable dealer. Many of your questions can be answered and your worries set to ease when you know the dealer has done their homework and has a reputation of being honest and fair.

Obviously, anything that you use often must be made to last. Do not buy a handbag that is worn or stained more then a little. Some ’wear and tear’ can add mystique, but too much damage only looks used. Handbags can be restored and repaired, but it is highly unlikely you would want to go to all the trouble of having a handbag repaired, only to use it on a daily basis. Also, although most people would not be able to tell the bag had been repaired, repairing a bag greatly decreases it open market value.

Understand what you are paying for. Vintage handbags are given value not only for their popularity of past and current times, but also for workmanship. This can include things such as the clasping mechanism. Your biggest concern might be that the handbag close properly, but you could pay top price because the bag you are eyeing happens to have the first magnetic closure ever used on a designer bag. If you happen to find these types of things interesting then this is the bag for you. But if you are more interested in the appearance of a handbag, you might not want to pay this much for a piece of ingenuity and history.

Prices for vintage designer handbags can range from less then a hundred to several thousand. The price depends on condition, uniqueness, design, rarity, condition, adornments (beading), the material from which the bag is made and age.

When shopping online for vintage designer handbags, try using different search words: purse, handbags, vintage purses, vintage designer handbags, clutch purses, lunch box purses, cigar box purses and so on. Also look for an online boutique that offers great detail on the items they sell. A good description of the bag, estimated age and a full list of any flaws should be provided. It is essential that the retailer offer a money back guarantee.

A vintage handbag is right for you if you want genuine GUCCI or Hermes leather bag at a great price and couldn’t afford one new. Nobody has to know that it is vintage, but everyone will be wondering where you got it.

What’s old, is new! What's on Sale!

by NIMISHA TIWARI ,TNN
THE TIMES OF INDIA

The world of fashion is constantly changing, more and more designers and stylists are looking to the past for inspiration; what’s old is new, and nowadays fashion is shaped by all the cultural influences from around the globe.

The past continues to be the inspiration for the future but more than ever, designers are concerned about where fashion and beauty trends originate. The styles and trends we will see in 2008 will inevitably reflect modern interpretations of past designs, while also keeping an eye on emerging global trends in beauty and culture.

What’s IN

Feminine dressing, thin belts, head scarves, pencil skirts that are knee length or longer, sequins, metallics, silk jersey and chiffon, hats, clutches, dressing up, colours — orange, rose, lavender, green and silver, the new neutral. Remember, comfort factor should be foremost.

What’s OUT

Wicker and raffia shoes, ultra short skirts and shorts, peasant skirts, jersey knits, baby doll dresses, lots of black and/or other dark colours, loud geometric prints. The takeaway would be a focus on fit and quality — less on brand. Go cheap on accessories like the skinny belt and metallic purses.

Experts’ forecast

Stylist Asha Hariharan says this year is going to be a clear celebration of Bohemian lifestyle. The beach blonde and copper blonde look will be back. Hair doesn’t need to be poker straight, in fact a vintage, luminous look is in.

Solo shades and shine lines are going to be in. With the winter going into autumn, the black accentuated look is back. People are going to revel in the effortless luxury in hair, couture and living spaces. The key word would be luxury in summer time. A taste for cigars, aged old whiskey in hues of vintage gold and ochre, rich boudoir, burgundy on endless silk drapes will rock the 2008 look.

Accessories designer Nina Lekhi, who recently won an award for not using leather, feels individuals would opt for utilitarian accessories in 2008. Men would go for bags with slings, mobile phone pouches and comfortable shoes. “There will be a conscientious drift from using real leather to moving away from practices which harm animals and the environment” she adds.

Stylist and designer Rocky S says, “My forecast for 2008 is that the silhouettes will be a mix of restricted and relaxed mood. The tent will continue with natural and high waist accents, bottoms are either narrow or completely flared. Colours will be neutral, fresh pastels with vivid trims running into rich deep shades. Long, flowy dresses will be in vogue, voluminous skirts and bit of power dressing for women. As for men, it will be the tapered slim fit in both top and bottom wear for semis and formals and more of lounge wear.

Designer Manish Malhotra plays it articulate. He says, “Palazzo trousers, skinny pants and jeans for men and women are cool. Knee-length dresses of fitted but quenched at the waist with a belt is a great look to watch out for.”
